These 3 questions will help you find a new style.
Whenever I go through a major life change, my personal style makes a major turn too. Like when I moved from New York City to Los Angeles. For the first year, each week I’d meet someone new and they would guess that I was from the east coast, many people guessing New York from the start. How? I dressed in all black almost every day and on the off days I wore navy blue or gray. : ) The color spectrum of corporate life and backstage theatre work in Manhattan.
By the end of that year, the California sun started to influence my choices mostly because the heat was magnified by the layers of black clothing, roasting me on my assisting errands to downtown LA. I started wearing more white clothing, light guazey cotton fabrics, t-shirts instead of button-up blouses, and light colored denim. By the time I returned to New York for a visit 2 years after moving out west, my former roommate and one of my bffs to this day said, “You look like a California girl”. I beamed with pride. I felt like a California girl.
Today, as a new mother those feels are back. So it’s time for a style overhaul! Let’s do this together! The first place to start when creating a new look though isn’t our closet. It’s inside. Inside, our thoughts and feelings to identify what’s brought about this desire for change. This is a fun exercise that will spark our journey to cultivating a fresh style. I’ve answered the questions below for my personal pivot. You can do them too for your style transformation.
Q. What life event has sparked your desire for new clothing?
A. Motherhood. Having my body shape evolve and also giving birth has changed my priorities and perspective on beauty.
Q. How does this event make you feel?
A. Powerful because I didn’t know I was capable of handling so much. Pressed for time. Very tired and sleepy. Nurturing and patient. Feminine.
Q. How do you want to feel in your clothing?
A. Comfortable but not messy or unproductive. Elegant, effortless. Sexy. Unrestricted so I can be active and play with Logan and also not be concerned about stains or damaging my clothes.
By answering these three questions I have a clear idea, a guide, pointing me in the right style direction. I now know, by doing the work in the beginning, how I want my clothing to make me feel in the end — Elegant and Effortless.
