But my friends call me, Becky.

Before I ever styled a client, before I earned degrees in costume design and business, before I launched workshops or styled closets… I was a teenager trying to hide a back brace under my high school clothes.

At 12 years old, I was diagnosed with scoliosis — a severe curvature of the spine. Instead of growing tall like the other kids, my spine twisted into an ‘S’. As I grew, a hump formed on one side of my back and my rib cage pushed forward on the other. By freshman year of high school, I was wearing a plastic back brace 23 hours a day — only taking it off to shower.

I was self-conscious. Quiet. Unsure of how the world saw me.

But my mom — a home-seamstress with an artist’s eye — took me shopping. She didn’t just buy me new clothes. She taught me how to style my body. She showed me how to use belts, shoulder pads, print, drape, shape, and fabric to create the illusion of symmetry, balance, and strength. She helped me see myself differently — not in spite of my brace, but because of what I could do with it.

Clothing became my shield and my stage. I stopped hearing “What’s wrong with you?” and started hearing “Where’d you get that jacket?”

That shift changed everything.

It was my first lesson in visual communication: style is language. It speaks before you do. It tells your story before you say a word. It can heal, empower, protect, and transform.

That’s why I became a professional stylist and costume designer — to uncover the hidden stories within clothing and give voice to the courage waiting to be revealed. My first stylist was my mom. And now, I get to be that person for you.
